My First Graduation Session — Manuel at Phon D Sutton
Some clients find you through an ad. Others find you because they already trust you. Manuel's session was the second kind — his mom had booked us for their family wedding, and when it came time for his senior portraits, she called us directly. That kind of return trust means more to me than almost anything else in this business, and it's part of why this session stuck with me as the one that kicked off my graduation portfolio.
The location
We shot near Phon D Sutton, a recreation area along the Salt River just outside Mesa — an area of open desert and riverside terrain I hadn't photographed before. Scouting a new location for a paying client always adds a bit of pressure, but the boulders, the river, and Red Mountain in the background gave us more to work with than I expected.
Fighting the light
Arizona sun doesn't do you any favors in the middle of the day — it's harsh, flat, and washes out color fast. I brought a flash specifically to fight that. Using off-camera flash let me keep true, vibrant color in Manuel's portraits instead of the blown-out highlights and flat tones you get from natural light alone in that kind of sun. It's a technique I lean on constantly now, but this was one of the sessions that really proved to me how much of a difference it makes.
When one hour turned into two
Manuel's family originally booked a one-hour session. We ended up staying for two. I wanted to make sure we captured everything right, and as the light shifted toward evening, I got to bring out the flash again for a set of dramatic night portraits — a different mood entirely from the daylight shots, and some of my favorite images from the whole session.
The moment that mattered most
Manuel graduated high school that year, and he wanted to be photographed with both his Venezuelan flag and an American flag stole — a way of honoring where he comes from and the path that brought him to this milestone. It was a proud, personal moment, and exactly the kind of detail that makes a graduation session about more than just a cap and gown.
This session set the tone for how I approach every graduation shoot since: find the light, fight it if I have to, and always make room for the detail that means the most to the person in front of the camera.
