My First Proposal — A Last-Minute Shoot at Tempe Town Lake

The story of my first-ever proposal photography session, a last-minute booking at Tempe Town Lake — shot solo, on my own birthday weekend.

My First Proposal — A Last-Minute Shoot at Tempe Town Lake

Some of the best sessions come from the ones you almost didn't take. This was one of them.A guy messaged me on Facebook the same day he wanted to propose — May 27th, the day before my own birthday. I'm still not sure if his original photographer fell through or if he just decided last minute to hire someone, but either way, I said yes. My wife had a birthday party planned for me that evening, but the timing worked — he needed photos at 6, the party wasn't starting until 7, and the location, Tempe Town Lake, was close to home.

Doing it solo, for the first time

Normally, my wife handles guiding clients while I focus on the camera. This time, she was home getting everything ready for my party, so I was on my own — camera, flash, and a fifteen-minute walk each way to the exact spot he wanted, in the middle of a Phoenix summer. No cart, no water, just the gear and the hope that it would all come together.

Waiting it out

I got to the spot early and just waited, pretending to photograph birds so I wouldn't tip anything off before he arrived with his girlfriend. I'd already walked him through exactly how he wanted the moment to go. When I saw them coming down the stairs, everything clicked into place.

The moment itself

He led her to where I was set up, and the surprise was real — an intimate, genuine moment right at the water's edge. I used flash to keep the light clean as the evening light started to fade, and the photos came out exactly the way I'd hoped for a first attempt at this kind of session.

Walking back thirstier than I've ever been

By the time I made the fifteen-minute walk back to my car, I was completely out of water and regretting not bringing any. I got home just in time to shower off and head straight into my own birthday party — tired, sunburned, and genuinely proud of how the session went. It's still in my gallery today as my very first proposal, and it taught me to always pack water for a walk-in location, no matter how short it looks on a map.
