What My First Session Taught Me
Every photographer remembers their first paid session. Mine happened at Woodland Park here in Mesa, Arizona — just a stretch of open field and a few trees, nothing fancy. But it taught me more about this craft than almost any session since.
How it started
I had just started advertising Luz y Vida Photography in local Facebook groups, mostly to see if anyone would even respond. Out of nowhere, I got a message from a guy asking about a natural, laid-back lifestyle session with his girlfriend. No portfolio behind me yet, no real equipment beyond the basics — just a fifty-dollar rate and a willingness to show up.
We agreed on Woodland Park, close to home, since it was familiar ground and easy to get to. I'll admit, I was cautious meeting a stranger for the first time as a new business owner — I got there early and hung back for a few minutes just to make sure everything felt right before introducing myself. Anyone starting out solo will understand that instinct.
The session itself
Once we started, I was honestly nervous the whole time. It was my first time directing real clients — figuring out posing, conversation, and timing all at once, with no experience to fall back on. The Arizona sun wasn't cooperating either; it was harsh, direct midday light, and I hadn't yet learned how to work with it instead of against it. I was pulling up Pinterest references between shots, and my wife was texting me pose ideas from home to help me through it.
We got through the full session, and somewhere in there, the nerves gave way to just doing the work.
What I took away from it
When I delivered the photos, the feedback was honest: he liked them, but he would have preferred a different location. That stuck with me — not as criticism, but as my first real lesson in location scouting. It's a big part of why I now put so much thought into where a session happens, and why I put together a locations page highlighting spots around Mesa and Phoenix that actually work for different kinds of shoots.
That harsh midday light taught me to think about timing and shadow before I ever pick up the camera. And that first nervous, sweaty, figure-it-out-as-you-go session is the reason I now walk every new client through what to expect before we even show up somewhere.
It wasn't a perfect first session. But it was the one that made every session after it better.
