A Sunset Session at Riparian Preserve

Joanna reached out to us through Facebook on behalf of her and her boyfriend, Daniel, looking for a couples session to celebrate a few months together. We landed on Riparian Preserve in Gilbert as the location — one of our favorite spots in the East Valley, with a small creek, desert plant life, and saguaros scattered throughout the reserve.

Timing it around sunset

We planned the session around sunset specifically, and it paid off — the light coming through the desert landscape gave the whole set a warm, romantic feel that's hard to recreate any other time of day. A touch of flash helped balance the fading light without losing that golden-hour glow.

Letting the couple guide the creative direction

Toward the end of the session, we always ask if there's anything a couple's missing or wants more of. Joanna spoke up and asked for something a little more romantic and intimate than what we'd already captured — and we loved that. When a couple tells us exactly what they're envisioning, it gives us a new creative direction to work with, and it usually leads to some of the strongest images from the whole session.

Riparian Preserve continues to be one of our go-to spots for couples sessions, and this one is a great example of why: the right light, the right setting, and a couple who knew what they wanted.
