A Sunset Proposal at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain

Some proposals come together with months of planning from everyone involved — this was one of them. We were connected to this session through Arizona Marriage Proposals, a proposal planning company we've partnered with, and the setup they built was one of the most beautiful backdrops we've had the chance to shoot.

The location

The proposal took place on a rooftop at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, a resort tucked into the north face of Camelback Mountain in Paradise Valley. The setup was arranged with the mountain itself as the backdrop, timed perfectly for sunset — one of the most popular and consistently beautiful proposal spots in the Valley for exactly that reason.

The moment

Chris flew in from out of state to surprise his future fiancée, and the whole setup came together to pull it off. When he brought her up to the rooftop and she saw what was waiting, the surprise was completely genuine.

The light did most of the work

With a sunset backdrop like that one, I barely needed flash — the natural light off the mountain did most of the work on its own. I brought in a touch of dramatic lighting toward the end of golden hour, but this was one of those rare sessions where stepping back and trusting the light was the right call.

This continues to be one of our favorite locations to shoot, and it's easy to see why it's become such a popular spot for proposals across the Valley.
